If your laptop now needs a charger far sooner than it used to, the battery may simply be worn out. A quick battery check settles the question, and it takes a few minutes using tools already on your machine.
The logic is simple. Every battery has a design capacity (what it could hold when new) and a full charge capacity (what it can hold today). Divide the second by the first and you get your battery health as a percentage. Windows keeps that figure out of its Settings app, so you need a short command. Macs show the numbers in System Information, and Dell, HP and Lenovo add their own diagnostics.
Below you will find every method, how to check a used laptop's battery before you pay for a second hand machine, and why UAE summers are hard on lithium-ion cells.
What Battery Health Actually Measures
Dell's battery health guide defines battery health as how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new. Age, charge cycles and temperature are the main forces pushing that number down.
A charge cycle means using 100% of the battery's charge, though not necessarily in one go. Use half today, recharge, use half tomorrow, and Apple counts that as one cycle. Battery University's lithium-ion guide says manufacturers rate most consumer lithium-ion batteries for 300 to 500 cycles. Dell adds that most people notice shorter runtime after 18 to 24 months, and heavy users can notice it within 18.
The Best Way to Check Laptop Battery Health on Windows 10 and 11
The most dependable built-in option is the battery report. Microsoft's powercfg documentation describes the /batteryreport option as a report of battery usage characteristics over the lifetime of the system. The same steps work on Windows 10 and 11.
How to run the battery report
-
Click Start and type cmd.
-
Open Command Prompt.
-
Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
-
Open File Explorer, go to your user folder (C:\Users followed by your account name) and double-click battery-report.html. It opens in your browser.
Dell's own steps use the same command and the same file location. Microsoft adds that the report is saved in the folder the command runs from, and that an /output option lets you choose the file name.
How to read the report
Start with the Installed battery section, which Dell lists first among the sections worth reading. Two lines matter:
-
Design capacity: what a new battery could hold, usually shown in mWh.
-
Full charge capacity: what the battery can hold now.
Full charge capacity divided by design capacity, multiplied by 100, is your battery health. Say design capacity reads 50,000 mWh and full charge capacity reads 42,000 mWh. 42,000 divided by 50,000 is 0.84, so the battery holds 84% of what it held when new.
Those two numbers let you judge any laptop's battery, whatever the brand. Neowin's Windows battery guide treats a loss of under 20% after a year or two of regular use as normal wear, and notes that some reports also list a cycle count. It also points out that the report only reflects what Windows has logged, so a freshly reinstalled system shows little usage history, and that Windows offers no single battery health figure in the Settings app.
How to Check Battery Health on a MacBook
On a MacBook, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information. Under Hardware, select Power. The current cycle count sits under Battery Information.
Apple's cycle count guide says the battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. That limit depends on the model: 1,000 for recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, and 500 or 300 for some older ones. Past the limit you can keep using the battery, but Apple recommends a replacement for best performance.
Apple also says Optimized Battery Charging helps reduce ageing by waiting to charge past 80% until you need the laptop. If you own a MacBook, switching it on is the cheapest battery fix there is.
Check Battery Health on Dell, HP and Lenovo Laptops
Manufacturer tools add detail and sometimes a plain verdict. If Windows has been reinstalled, these apps may be missing, and the battery report above still works.
Dell
Dell's library lists five routes: the Windows battery report, the BIOS, Dell Optimizer, Dell Power Manager and on-board diagnostics. For the BIOS, press F2 repeatedly at startup and look for Battery Health under Overview or General. In Dell Power Manager, open Battery Information.
To check the status the Dell way, read the label. Dell uses five: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor and Unknown. Fair means the battery is nearing the end of its usable life. Poor means it no longer provides enough power, and Dell recommends replacing it.
HP
To test the battery on an HP, HP's battery test instructions offer two routes. In HP Support Assistant, click Run battery check. Or open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows as administrator, choose Battery Check and click Run once. The test takes about two minutes, and the first line on the results page shows the battery's status.
Lenovo
Lenovo's ThinkPad battery guide says the battery status icon sits in the Windows notification area, and that Lenovo Vantage shows detailed battery information. Lenovo wrote that guide for the ThinkPad T590 and P53s, but Vantage is the starting point on other ThinkPads too.
How to Check Used Laptop Battery Health Before You Buy
Wear is the one thing a second hand price tag never shows. The same routine works for renewed, refurbished and open box stock:
-
Run the battery report and divide full charge capacity by design capacity.
-
Look for physical warning signs. Dell lists bulging, gaps in the case and a laptop that wobbles on a flat surface.
-
Read the warranty line for the battery. Dell's replacement checklist shows that a battery's cover can be 1 year or 3 years depending on the battery.
A quick way to check battery health for laptop models you have shortlisted is to do it in the first week. If you are comparing renewed laptops at FixBuddy, the product pages list a 12-month warranty and 7-day returns, so the return window is the time to run the report. Business models such as the ThinkPad T480, Dell Latitude 5490 and HP EliteBook 840 G8 all follow the same checks.
Not sure how "renewed" differs from "refurbished"? Our renewed vs refurbished guide breaks it down, and open box laptops sit in a category of their own.
Why UAE Heat Wears Laptop Batteries Out Faster
Lithium-ion batteries dislike heat. Battery University treats anything above 30°C as elevated temperature and says the worst case is a fully charged battery sitting somewhere hot. Its storage table for cobalt-based lithium-ion cells shows the gap. After one year at 25°C, a cell held at 40% charge keeps an estimated 96% of its capacity, against 80% for a cell held at full charge. At 40°C the figures fall to 85% and 65%.
Research from the Gulf points the same way. A 2023 peer-reviewed Hamad Bin Khalifa University study in Qatar aged four commercial lithium-ion cells at 25°C and 45°C and found capacity loss was higher at the higher temperature. A Gulf News report on heat from August 2026 says heat is the single biggest factor in how fast a lithium battery loses capacity, and that the loss does not come back. That article was about phones, but laptops use the same family of cells. It also notes that closed car interiors routinely pass 60°C.
What that means in practice:
-
Never leave a laptop in a parked car. Nothing in Battery University's table suggests a hot, fully charged cell recovers later.
-
Keep the vents clear. Battery University says a cool laptop extends battery life, and warns against blocking airflow on a bed or pillow.
-
Watch the plug. Battery University says leaving a laptop plugged in is safe under normal conditions, because charging stops when the battery is full. Dell suggests running on battery now and then. Where both point the same way is temperature: a full battery in a hot spot is the combination to avoid.
-
On a Mac, leave Optimized Battery Charging on.
When the Numbers Say It Is Time to Replace the Battery
Dell's checklist gives clear triggers. Consider a new battery when you see:
-
A Fair or Poor battery health status.
-
Runtime under half of the original.
-
Frequent diagnostic error codes.
-
Unexpected shutdowns while the battery still shows charge.
-
Physical swelling or damage.
-
Battery age beyond two to three years with heavy use.
On a Mac, Apple's 80% design target at the maximum cycle count is the equivalent line.
Swelling needs more care. If the case has gaps, the keyboard lifts or the laptop rocks on a flat table, Dell says to stop using the battery, disconnect the AC adapter and let the battery drain. Do not puncture, press on, pry at or open it. Dell says swelling can come from age, charge cycles or heat, and that a swollen battery may get stuck in the device, so do not try to free it. Dell does not describe swelling as an immediate hazard, but treat it as urgent anyway and leave the removal to a technician.
If your report points to a worn battery, FixBuddy's laptop repair service collects the device from your home or office, repairs it and brings it back, with a diagnosis and quote before any work starts. Battery issues are part of what the team handles. Reviewers often mention the on-site side. Naufaan wrote that the team "came to my place and repaired my laptop at 10pm", and Mohammed said "they even offer on-site repairs". Those reviews describe laptop repairs in general, not batteries specifically. To ask about your own machine, use the contact page or call +971 52 306 4679.
FAQ: Laptop Battery Health Questions
1. Can you check laptop battery health without installing software?
Yes. Windows has the built-in battery report, and macOS has System Information. Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops usually add manufacturer apps too, though a reinstalled system may not have them.
2. Can you see laptop battery health in Windows Settings?
Not as a health figure. Neowin's guide says Windows has no single battery health number and that you cannot check it from the Settings app. Use the battery report and divide full charge capacity by design capacity.
3. Where to check laptop battery health on a Mac?
Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, select Power and read the cycle count under Battery Information. Compare it with the limit for your model in Apple's table.
4. What is a good laptop battery health percentage?
No single figure applies to every battery. Apple designs Mac batteries to keep up to 80% of capacity at their maximum cycle count, and Neowin treats under 20% loss after a year or two as normal. Dell's Fair and Poor labels are the signal to plan a replacement.
5. How often should I check my laptop battery health?
Dell recommends every few months, or sooner if runtime changes noticeably. Save each report so you can compare full charge capacity over time.
6. How do I check battery health on a second hand laptop?
Run the Windows battery report or the manufacturer's diagnostic, divide full charge capacity by design capacity, and inspect the case for bulging or gaps. Then read the battery line of the warranty before you pay.
7. Is it safe to keep a laptop plugged in all the time?
Battery University says it is safe under normal conditions because charging stops when the battery is full, while Dell suggests using the battery occasionally. In a hot environment, heat is the bigger risk.
Run the Report Today
Open Command Prompt, run powercfg /batteryreport, note the two capacity numbers and repeat in three months. A trend tells you more than a single reading, and in the UAE it also tells you whether summer heat is costing you capacity.
